Guigou spent much of his career working in and around Marseille and throughout sites in Provence, painting the flat plains, river valleys, and the hills and mountains in the region. This view of a path through a fenced area toward the mountains in the distance resembles certain landscapes painted in the 1860s, such as the "View of Aullach," depicting the area east of Marseille, and "Provençal Landscape, Les Labours," both from 1866. Like the present drawing, these views are often enlivened by laborers, most of whom worked in quarries, plasterworks, or bauxite mines at the time.
