In 1960, Andre began to write poems in which, he said, "I took the English language for subject matter." He composed his poems on a typewriter, which gave them a mechanical appearance similar to his sculptures created from arrangements of standard industrial materials. Andre approached language itself as a raw material not unlike stacks of bricks or rows of lead sheets. This typewritten poem relates to a series of twenty-six pages collectively called "Yucatan." Composed in 1972, each page has an individual title based on the first line of the poem. The poems are based on the book "Incidents of Travel in Yucatan," by J.L. Stephens, originally published in 1843. This sheet is part of a set of color copies of "Yucatan" that Andre made in 1975.
