This drawing relates to the right half of a painting by Domenichino formerly in the Rondinini collection, Rome, and more recently sold at Sotheby's, London, 31 Jan-1 Feb 2013, lot 72. There is, however, an etching after the painting by Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, as well as several drawings attributed to Grimaldi (Teyler Museum, inv. K VI 012; Chatsworth inv. 558; Louvre inv 8179), and it is not clear whether the Morgan drawing is indeed a preparatory study by Domenichino or whether it is instead somehow related to the series of Grimaldi copies.
