Cliffs with River Between
1630
Pen and black ink, with gray wash, on paper.
9 1/16 x 12 7/16 inches (230 x 315 mm)
Gift of Mrs. Donald M. Oenslager, 1982.
1982.75:327
Notes:
Donald Oenslager rejected the attribution to Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682) suggested by the inscription on the mat. He argued that the treatment of the cliffs with their castles and foliage treatment seem much closer to Giacomo C. Torelli (1604 or 1608-1678) and may have been influenced by his set for "Andromide," Act III, Paris, 1650 (engraved by F. Chaveau).
Inscription:
Inscribed at lower left on mat, "Le Pautre".
Provenance:
Alister Mathews, Bournemouth; acquired in 1960 by Donald M. Oenslager, New York.
Associated names:
Mathews, Alister, former owner.
Oenslager, Donald, 1902-1975, former owner.
