Proposal for Annex of Pierpont Morgan Library
1925
Graphite on paper.
Sheet: 11 3/4 x 12 3/16 inches (298 x 310 mm); design area: 4 15/16 x 6 3/8 inches (125 x 163 mm)
Gift of Mr. Robert B. O'Connor.
1976.31:1
Notes:

Chester Price was a draughtsman with the office of Benjamin Wistar Morris, architect for the annex.
This preliminary idea for the exterior of Benjamin Wistar Morris's Annex building of 1924-28 shows an editice of slightly squatter proportions, with a split staircase and a fountain feature. While the general austere exterior was retained, the elaborate stairs and fountain were rejected for a single, unadorned staircase which constituted the entrance to the Pierpont Morgan Library from 1928 until 2003, when the Renzo Piano project reoriented the institution's facade to Madison Avenue.
