Notes: 

The inscription "May" on the old mount of this drawing, which entered the Library with an attribution to Johanna Helena Herolt, suggests that there may once have been a series of 12 depictions corresponding to the Months. Indeed, the "Matthiola incana" or "Brompton double stock" is noted for its early spring flowering.
Formerly attributed to Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).

Inscribed on a cartouche on the old mount (now destroyed), "May".
