This drawing is a study for the woodcut, dated 1851, depicting the Prussian general Hans Karl von Winterfeldt from the series of three-quarter-length portraits of Frederick the Great and his Paladins published under the title "Aus Kn̲ig Friedrichs Zeit. Kriegs- und Friedenhelden gezeichnet von Adolph Menzel. In Holz geschnitten von Eduard Kretzschmar", Berlin, 1856.
