Most of the drawings are in black chalk, with some pen and black ink, with white opaque watercolor, some are in watercolor and tempera, on blue paper leaves.

Purchased as the gift of some of the Fellows in memory of Benjamin Sonnenberg.

Notes:
Most of the drawings are of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century historical subjects; two relate to the artist's painting "The Halberdier", showing a soldier in sixteenth-century dress.
Inscription:
Inscribed and dated on a watercolor sketch of Thames river scene at the beginning of the sketchbook, in black chalk at lower left, "London aôut 1879"; also dated on another watercolor of a barge near the end, in pen and brown ink, at lower right, "16 avril 85".
