Inscribed at center of Richardson mount, in his hand, in brown ink, "Van Dyck"; on verso of mount, in graphite, "15264".

Jonathan Richardson, Sr. (Lugt 2184; on his mount, although there are no pressmarks on verso); Thomas Hudson (Lugt 2432); not distinguishable among the forty-two drawings by Van Dyck in his sale, London, Langford, 15-26 March 1779, but possibly one of twelve divided between lots 35 and 36 ("Six [studies] for portraits ... "; for £1.1.0 and £2.7.0); Sir Joshua Reynolds (Lugt 2364); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
