An imitator of Canaletto, Tironi catered to the sizable eighteenth-century market for views of his native city. This drawing records the visit of Pope Pius VI to Venice; upon his arrival he was greeted by Doge Paolo Renier in a ceremony on the small island of San Giorgio in Alga. The pope's visit took place in 1782 and is also the subject of a painting by Tironi's more famous contemporary Francesco Guardi. --Exhibition Label, from "Tiepolo, Guardi, and Their World: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Drawings"
