After the damaged fresco of the "Removal of the Body of St. Christopher" in the Orvetari chapel, Eremitani church, Padua, painted by Mantegna ca. 1454-57. The church however was largely destroyed in 1944 by Allied bombs.
Formerly attributed to Andrea Mantegna, Isola di Carturo 1431-1506 Mantua.

Inscribed on verso, in graphite, "Provient de chez / Albert Besnard (?)".
