The drawing bears an old attribution to Parmigianino and was catalogued as school of Parma in Fairfax Murray’s times. Popham, in 1958, thought it by Niccolo del’Abate, Pouncey in 1965 saw the influence of the mature Giulio Campi (Cremona ca. 1508-1573 Cremona) in it. Clearly by a good hand, the drawing is close to finished drawings by Giulio Campi such as his study Holy Family with Saint Anthony and Francis in Brno, preparatory for a painting realized for an altar in the church of San Domenico, Cremona (inv. B. 920; Cremona 1997-1998, 238-239, no. 70).
