Description:

The inchoate form at far right seems to depict a lion, the attribute associated with St. Jerome. However, the figure’s youth and short beard suggest that the present study might illustrate Daniel in the Lion’s Den.

Notes:

Watermark: none visible through lining.

Inscription:

Inscribed on Richardson mount at lower center, "Battista Franco"; on verso of mount at upper center in pen and brown ink with Richardson's pressmark, "AA 50. / B"; at center in pen and brown ink, "1 S. 2. 83"; at lower center in pen and brown ink, "B[arry].D[elany]"; at lower left in pencil, "S.W.H.L. 1902".
