While in the Scholz collection the drawing was attributed to Defendente Ferrari, a painter active in Piedmont ca. 1500 to 1535. Defendente remains completely unknown as a draughtsman and there is no corresponding figure in his painted work. Though probably North Italian, the artist of the present sheet may well have come from areas other than Piedmont, such as Verona or Ferrara.
