Both studies appear to be preparatory for Canuti's ceiling fresco of "The Four Temperaments" in the library in S. Michele in Bosco, Bologna. The recto is a study in the reverse direction for the Melancholic Humor; the verso comes very close to the Phlegmatic Humor.
