The drawing entered the Morgan’s collection as by a follower of Correggio. In particular the technique of pen and ink over copious red chalk underdrawing is reminiscent of that master, though the resemblance seems merely superficial. The drawing appears to be the work of a later sixteenth-century central Italian draftsman, possibly, as A. E. Popham suggested, a Roman artist in the circle of Taddeo Zuccaro (undated opinion recorded in the curatorial file).
