The present sheet, formerly attributed to the Dutch master Philips Wouvermans, actually served as Cochin's study for his 1744 print "Accident de Voyage", which reproduced a lost painting by Wouvermans (1619-1668). On 29 August 1744 Cochin offered the French Royal Academy two proofs of the print, which was announced in the periodical Mercure de France that same month. The original painting was identified in the 1760 sale of the Comte de Vence (no. 93).
Inscribed on the verso of the old mount, in brown ink, at upper center, "N:3"; at left center, in the same hand, "J:P: 1777"; at lower left, in another hand, "[w]as given me by Mr ["r" in superscript] Sandby & is a very scarse master"; at lower right, in the same hand, "Philip Wouvermans born at Harleam...1620 died ag[cut off]".
