Signed and dated in the lower left corner, in black chalk, "PM["P" in superscript, "M" in subscript]olyn / 1656".
Watermark: Foolscap (similar to Churchill, no. 337: 1651), fragment of head with two balls.

Probably Dr. Edward J. Riggall, London; probably his sale, London, Sotheby's, 6-8 June 1901, one of seven in lot 521: "P. Molyn. Studies of landscape, mostly signed (7)" (to Fairfax Murray for £7.0.0); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
