Signed and dated at the lower right center, in black ink, "W.V. Mieris Fecit. Ano ["o" in superscript] 1689". Inscribed on the verso: at upper center, in large script, in brown ink, "Mansell"; at lower left corner, in fine script, in black ink, "James No ["o" in superscript] 1"; and at lower center, in graphite, "7".
Watermark: Countermark: Letters "IV", between chain lines.

Probably Frans van de Velde, Amsterdam; probably his sale, Amsterdam, 16 January 1775, Album C, lot 171: "Een rustende Diana, in een landschap; fraai en zeer uitvoerig gewasschen. Met O.I. Inkt. H. 5 3/4 B. 7 duim [=148 x 180 mm.]" (to "van den Berg" for 1.5 fl.); Mansell; Miss James [?]; Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J.
