Inscribed on the verso, at upper left, in red chalk, "£-6-0".
Watermark: Rampant lion, holding wheat sheaves and sword, on shield, within a double circle surmounted by a crown, above monogram letters "GVH" (similar to Heawood, no. 3145). Seven Provinces.

Probably W.H. Barnard; possibly his sale, London, Sotheby's, 7-8 April 1893, one of three in lot 64: "... sketches of Landscapes with figures (3)" (to Fairfax Murray); Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J.
