Inscribed by the artist in pen and brown ink at right margin, but partially cut away: above, "W"; below, "I recommend you to use the Gammon powder yourself & have it cast about his [cut] ... / so she kissed the child, partook of lunch, bade adieu to the King & Queen and took off [cut]..."

Provenance: 
According to the donor, Thackeray gave this drawing to her uncle, Judge P. Daly, who was a friend of the author. He in turn, gave it to Mrs. Philbin's mother whence it passed into her hands.
