Born Amédée-Charles-Henry de Noé, the artist known by his pseudonym, Cham, became one of the leading French caricaturists of the century, spending over thirty years at the humorous periodical Le Charivari. Athena Leoussi estimated he produced over 40,000 drawings as an illustrator. Through his cleverly captioned images, he skewered Paris society and politics. This page, with a study of a raggedly dressed boy looking at mushrooms and an older man wearing spectacles, has not yet been connected to one of his many cartoons.
