Calendars in Books of Hours were sometimes illustrated by vignettes depicting the "labors of the months," generally rural seasonal activities, such as shearing sheep in June and mowing hay in July. Bening, whose works were highly sought after throughout Europe, is usually regarded as the last great Flemish illuminator. This book was made for a member of the Portuguese Sá family, from whom it passed to King Manuel's armorer, Alvaro da Costa, after whom the manuscript is named. Bening was especially known for sensitively rendered landscapes in full-page calendar illustrations. Such cycles had not occurred in manuscripts since their initial and singular appearance almost a hundred years earlier, in the duc de Berry's Très Riches Heures, a manuscript that inspired Bening.

Liturgical scene: Celebration of Mass—A bleeding heart surrounded by four bleeding wounds (Five Wounds of Christ) appears amid rays of light above figures celebrating mass within a church. A tonsured priest wearing a chasuble stands beside an altar and raises his joined hands. He turns toward a tonsured deacon wearing a dalmatic. The deacon’s back is turned, and he is reading from a book on a lectern. In front of the lectern are two acolytes holding candles. A second deacon holds a thurible as a kneeling acolyte fills it with incense. Beyond, a group of figures stands behind an altar surmounted by a retable and flanked by curtains. To the right, a hooded figure stands with joined hands raised. The church is adorned with stained glass and statues, including one of the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Evangelist John in a balcony and a statue of a mitered bishop in an architectural niche on the wall. The door of the church is open showing a view of city.
The miniature is framed by a border in which an angel is pulling back a curtain and holding a lit paschal candle decorated with flowers. To the right and below, a man and woman are kneeling in prayer. He holds a book in both hands, and she holds a rosary in joined, raised hands.

Virgin Mary: Miracle of Seven Sorrows—Within a central panel, a nimbed Virgin Mary wearing a wimpled veil is seated with her hands folded in her lap. She is pierced by five swords (sword of compassion). In seven panels around her, the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin are depicted, clockwise from the top left corner:
1) Christ: Bearing cross―Christ, shown with a rayed nimbus, bears a tau-cross over His shoulder. He is behind soldiers and is followed by a nimbed Virgin Mary and two Holy Women.
2) Christ: Crucifixion―Christ, shown with a rayed nimbus and wearing a loin cloth, is affixed with three nails to a tau cross. Next to Him on one side is the Virgin Mary, nimbed and veiled, partly kneeling with her hands crossed at her breast. On His other side is a nimbed Evangelist John with his clasped hands raised to his cheek.
3) Christ: Pietà—A nimbed and veiled Virgin Mary is seated at the base of the cross. She supports the body of Christ, who has a rayed nimbus, on her lap, and her joined hands are raised.
4) Christ: Entombment―Joseph of Arimathea and a nimbed Evangelist John lower the shrouded body of Christ, who has a rayed nimbus, into a sarcophagus. A nimbed and veiled Virgin Mary with hands clasped at her breast and a Holy Woman look on.
5) Christ: Presentation—A nimbed and veiled Virgin Mary supports the nimbed Christ Child, who is standing on an altar. Simeon extends both his hands towards Him. Several figures, including Joseph the Carpenter with a basket of doves and Anna Prophetess with a candle, look on.
6) Christ: Flight into Egypt―A nimbed and veiled Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child in both arms, rides sideways on an ass. She follows Joseph the Carpenter, holding a staff and sack over his shoulder.
7) Christ: Among doctors—A nimbed Christ Child stands at the top of stairs on a platform amid doctors. A nimbed and veiled Virgin Mary appears on the left. The miniature is surrounded and divided into the eight panels by an illusionistic wood frame.

Virgin Mary: Annunciation―Within a room, a crowned Archangel Gabriel holding a scepter in his left hand raises his right hand, pointing upward. He kneels on the steps of an architectural setting that suggests a private chapel, in which the Virgin Mary kneels at prie-dieu, her right hand on an open book. The Dove of the Holy Ghost appears above her head amid rays of light and an aureole. An archway in the far wall of the room leads to a bedroom furnished with a bed and a chair. Ursula of Cologne: Massacre of Ursula and virgins—A soldier loads an arrow in a crossbow. Flanking him, two soldiers aim bows and arrows at a crowned Ursula, who is glancing upward, and several virgins, many of whom are pierced by arrows and dead. They are within a ship, along with Pope Cyricus, wearing a triple-crowned tiara, a woman wearing a headdress (Gerasina of Sicily?), and two men, one of whom is falling over the side of the boat. All the figures within the ship are nimbed. In the background on shore, men aim bows and arrows at two more ships carrying nimbed virgins. In the distance are buildings of a city within a landscape.
The scene is within an illusionistic wood frame.
