16th-century Italian (Rome) brown morocco gold tooled with interlace border, foliate ornaments and horizontal medallion at center with Apollo & Pegasus, attributed by Anthony Hobson to Niccolò Franzese; Nixon attributed to the Farnese Binder.
Provenance: 
The Apollo & Pegasus bindings were previously thought to belong to Demetrio Carnevari or Per Luigi Farnese. Giovanni Battista Grimaldi (b. about 1524), binding (see Hobson, Apollo and Pegasus, pp. 49ff); Archibald Acheson, Earl of Gosford (1806-1864), purchased for £5.5.1 in 1840, shelfmark: B4 (front pastedown), entire library purchased in 1878 by: James Toovey (1814-1893), booklabel (front pastedown), through inheritance to his son: Charles J. Toovey (1848-1925), entire library purchased in 1899 by: Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), purchased with the Toovey collection, 1899.
