Belle da Costa Greene: A Portrait Gallery | Newspapers

Greene was one of the highest-paid American women of her day, and the press frequently covered her professional and social activities. A few illustrators created imaginative depictions of Greene in action: placing a bid at auction, reaching for a book, or conducting business at her desk. Other news reports included reproductions of photographic portraits by Adolph de Meyer, Theodore C. Marceau, or Paul Thompson, sometimes cropped, silhouetted, or otherwise altered. The Morgan is collecting all known appearances of Greene in the press; a selection is included in this gallery.
