Recent Acquisitions

April 23 through July 7, 2024

The Morgan’s collections continually grow and evolve. This presentation features a selection of drawings newly acquired by the Department of Drawings and Prints, which focuses on work created before 1900. Certain drawings here fill a long-noted gap in the collection, although often within some of our greatest areas of strength. The Morgan has many important drawings by François Boucher, Guercino, and Georges Seurat, for instance, but the monumental examples purchased in recent years augment those holdings with previously absent types of studies by these artists. Drawings by Pietro Longhi, however, are so rare that it was a surprise to find one available—and an easy decision to add it to our rich collection of eighteenth- century Venetian art. Gifts also remain an essential resource for the growth and variety of our holdings, and we are grateful to the donors who present works to the institution, thus sharing their passion for collecting with the public.
