Léon Bakst Poster Design for Firebird Print

Léon Bakst’s (1866-1924) 1915 drawing for Firebird was probably made not as a costume design but for a poster to advertise the Ballets Russes’ 1916 tour to North America. The floating poses and flying garments, with sexual overtones, make clear that this was an image intended to draw the viewer’s attention.
