Lovely landscapes to enhance your decor, this set of 3 magnets is sure to make a perfect gift! Reproduced from the generous gift of drawings by Clement C. Moore, these drawings all reflect both realistic and idealistic depictions of landscapes characteristic of the time period.

Hendrick Avercamp’s (1585-1634) Fishermen on a Riverbank with the Town of Kampen in the Distance, is an exceptional finished watercolor work by an artist better known for his winter landscapes. The artist not only conveyed a sense of season, but a sense of time with the warm golden glow of late sunset.

The blue ink landscape drawing, Figures in a Wooded Landscape with a City in the Distance by Isaak Major (1576-1642), belongs to a stylistically coherent group of meticulously drawn fantastical landscapes. Nestled among winding trees is a wooden cottage overlooking a mountainous landscape with a city by the water in the distance.

The striking River Landscape with a View of Oxford in the Distance by Jan Siberechts (1627-1703) completes this set. Siberechts, a native of Antwerp, came to England in 1672 at the behest of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and remained there for the rest of his life, almost single-handedly creating the genre of the country house view, works that depicted and celebrated the stately country seats of the aristocracy. It is a well-known fact that almost all the significant early topographical views of British towns, whether drawn, painted, or engraved, were the work of foreign artists.

This magnet set was designed to accompany the exhibition Far and Away: Drawings from the Clement C. Moore Collection on view at the Morgan Library & Museum June 28, 2024 through September 22, 2024.
