hematite
17 x 10 mm
Morgan Seal 1036
Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan sometime between 1885 and 1908.
Notes:

"Appearing at the right of the scene in 1036, and as the main theme of 1037 and 1038, are figures drinking through tubes from vessels. This ancient motif is also found in Nuzi impressions (Nuzi 8, 19, 560-563) and in the Cappadocian seal 894, indicating that the theme continued to be used in the north, though it fell into disuse in the south after the Akkad period. The winged figure in 1036 holds a ball staff, a symbol that is touched or held only in Cappadocian (907) and Mitannian cylinders (Nuzi 625)."--Porada, CANES, p. 144
