God holding mace and facing worshiper

between 1500 B.C. and 1350 B.C.
hematite
24 x 11 mm
Morgan Seal 1024
Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan sometime between 1885 and 1908.
Notes:

"Though crude, the weather god and the worshiper in 1024 can be compared to similar figures in the Syrian seal 964--the god because of his attire and posture, though the object in his hand is of uncertain nature, and the worshiper only because of his attire. The group comprising a figure with Egyptian apron facing a winged goddess recalls a similar motif in 1000, which has been classified as Palestinian of about 1350-1200 B.C. The resemblance may indicate a similar dating for 1024, despite its cursory execution, and imply that 1024 was made in Palestine, perhaps after the Nuzi age in Mesopotamia. This supposition is supported by the fact that seals of Mitannian style have been found in Palestine and that some of them may have been manufactured there."--Porada, CANES, p. 142
