Join the Morgan Library & Museum for a special 30th anniversary screening of Clueless (1995), starring Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy, a funny and clever adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma. The evening will include a discussion with the film’s costume designer, Mona May.
Directed by Amy Heckerling, Clueless brings Austen’s satirical commentary of Regency England to the sartorially fixated world of mid-1990s Beverly Hills.
Mona May has created unforgettable costumes for major motion pictures and television that have captured the imagination and inspired fashion trends for generations to come. She is the vision behind iconic film fashion including The Wedding Singer, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Never Been Kissed, Enchanted, and A Night at the Roxbury. As a fearless storyteller and creator, May has elevated the status of fashion in film since the release of Clueless, which changed the fashion landscape for many generations and continues to inspire fashion designers today.
This film is rated PG-13. The program takes place in Gilder Lehrman Hall on the Ground Floor. Doors to the theater will open 30 minutes before the film begins. A Lively Mind: Jane Austen at 250 will be open for program attendees from 5-6 PM.
