1st ed. (and 1st issue?) of the Syriac N.T. in the Peshitta version, and the first book printed in Syriac. This ed. edited by Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter, assisted by a Syrian priest named Moses Meredinaeus (i.e. of Mardin).
The Syriac type was prepared under the direction of Guillaume Postel and cut by Kaspar Kraft, a Swabian artist of Ellwangen.
The table of contents on verso of 2d prelim. leaf calls for a dedication to the Archduke Ferdinand preceding the acts and one to the Archduke Karl preceding the Epistles of James, Peter & John.
13 full page woodcuts of an emblematic character, with coats of arms and symbols, concerning the Emperor Ferdinand I, at whose expense the book was published; two woodcuts represent the crucifixion and the Pietas.
Contents differs from the description of the editio princeps in Darlow and Moule. PML copy contains only: Title in Syriac and Latin, printed in red and black) and preliminary leaves (in Latin, including a dedication dated at end Viennae Austriacae v. Id. Iunii. Anno M.D. LV.). Text divided into 2 parts: Part 1, Gospels of Matthew (colophon, 14 Feb, 1555), Mark (colophon, 21 March, 1555), Luke (colophon, 25 April, 1555), and John (colophon, 18 May, 1555). Part 2, Epistles of St. Paul, (colophon, 18 July, 1555).
