Electrotype from an engraved block after Doré, with a design for an illustration for Gargantua et Pantagruel, originally created for Doré's 1873 illustrated edition of the collected works of François Rabelais (Oeuvres. Paris : Garnier Frères, 1873, v. 1, p. 48); this electrotype employed for a later edition of Rabelais (Paris : Garnier Frères, [ca. 1880]) issued by the same publisher, with the Doré illustrations, but in a smaller format, with the plates cut down and the designs cropped to fit the reduced dimensions.
Signed within the plate: G Doré.
Library also owns the original wood block from which this electrotype was created. See: PML 128507.57.
Electrotype inscribed on the reverse with the number "55".
