The drawing belongs to a group of 90 similar studies of a single dog, drawn from life in black chalk in different poses and traditionally attributed to Snyders. The largest group is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam; other examples are in the Prentenkabinet der Rijksuniversiteit, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, the Graphische Sammlung, Munich and elsewhere.
