Decoration: The illumination consists of a decorative title page and end page; nine decorative section headings with 4- and 5-line illuminated initials; three decorative section endings; and gold initials marking the beginning of each verse.
Moody's poem, first published in 1900 and quickly famous, was inspired by the author's seeing Augustus Saint-Gaudens' memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment in Boston. The Mungo brothers were Italian immigrants to New York, who specialized in the production of illuminated manuscripts, particularly of patriotic subject matter.
