On verso, portrait of a boy in red ink.
Like many portrait artists, McIntyre turned to landscapes later in her career. This is a rare example of the artist's late work, as she produced relatively little after the birth of her first and only child, Lois McIntyre Darling (1917-1989). This verdant landscape may depict the terrain near Riverside, Connecticut, where the Staten Island-born artist was living at the time. Although executed in her preferred medium of watercolor on ivory, this landscape displays a looser handling of paint, lending the scene a more atmospheric and modern quality in comparison to the high degree of finish in her earlier work.
