Notes:
Engraved block after Bewick's design for The Elephant (reversed) used in Quadrupeds, p. 186, 1824 ed., probably engraved by an apprentice.
Part of the collection of 94 wood-engraved blocks by Bewick and pupils under his supervision for History of Quadrupeds, inherited by his daughters when the workshop closed in 1849: "an odd assortment, a great number being laterally reversed and clumsily stiff apprentice copies of quadrupeds and tail-pieces" (cf. Bain).

From the workshop of Thomas Bewick; purchased by Julia Boyd at the Supplementary Sale of the Isabella Bewick estate at Newcastle 26 Aug. 1884; sold on behalf of Mrs. Hester Haig (lot 325, Sotheby's, London, 16 Feb. 1960); acquired by Julia P. Wightman from Muir Dawson.
