Telling her that her father sent him "a Christmas present which was a ten dollar check"; mentioning that he received "a fine spice-cake from Josie" [Josephine Herbst] and "a small, heavy package from Tom and Elizabeth"; describing the letters he sees in the personnel office from mothers and girlfriends requesting furloughs for soldiers; commenting on a "propaganda film" they saw today and writing, "I still think the average field-soldier will go into a deep sleep the minute he hits a theatre-seat and that there isn't a movie in the world that will keep him awake"; adding that his "story went off to Lieutenant Clark today."
