Made for Emperor Charles V (1500-1558, imperial arms of Austria on fol. 3); belonged in 1576 to Martin de Gaztelu (secretary of Charles V and secretary of Philip II of Spain) and his wife Leonor de Eça (inscription on fol. 1r); inscription on fol. 1r: owned in 1734 by Christóbal Fernandez de Córdoba, 10th Count of Sástago (1652-1737; viceroy of Sicily in 1726); lent in 1881 to the Spanish and Portuguese Exhibition in London by Don Marcial Lorbés de Aragon, Sádaba, Zaragoza, Spain (exhibition label, no. 96); owned by E. Gutmann of Berlin in 1921; K.W. Bachstitz Gallery, The Hague, 1924; owned by C. Romer-Williams in 1925; purchased from Romer-Williams in 1925.
