Boxwood sketchbook of 6 panels with 9 drawings, executed in France, probably Paris, ca. 1400. Additional panel from the same sketchbook is under M.346a.
William Voelkle notes that "Millard Meiss has dated the most beautiful, finished and best known of the drawings (fols. 1v, 2, 2v, 3v) about 1400-1405, but rightly suggests that some of the drawings on the other folios (4, 5v) represent a style that is at least a generation earlier, a view also shared by Ulrike Jenni. A third completely different style is represented by the head on fol. 6, which was added considerably later in the fifteenth century."--Cf. Gesta, XX/1, p.45.
Decoration: 6 boxwood panels, which contain 9 drawings washed with white gesso and incorporating sketches/figure studies executed in metalpoint.
Artist: circle of Jacquemart de Hesdin.
The accession number MS M.346 was formerly assigned to Plutarch's Les histoires des vertueuses femmes faictes du grec ..., which is currently accessioned under MA 559a.
