hematite

Morgan Seal 853
Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan sometime between 1885 and 1908.
Notes:

"The rendering of the scene in 853, which features a weather god on a bull, conforms to the style of the present group, though the god carries neither a lightning fork nor the weapon usually added in Cappadocian seals. This may be due to carelessness on the part of the engraver."--Porada, CANES, p. 108
