Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543) was one of the most skilled, versatile, and inventive artists in Renaissance Europe. Born in Augsburg, Germany, Holbein spent most of his career abroad, in Switzerland and England. The artist created captivating portraits of courtiers, merchants, scholars, and statesmen, and served as a court painter to King Henry VIII (1491–1547). Join Austėja Mackelaitė, Annette and Oscar de la Renta Assistant Curator of Drawings and Prints, and John T. McQuillen, Associate Curator of Printed Books & Bindings, in a lecture to celebrate the opening of Holbein: Capturing Character at the Morgan. The talk will trace the development of the artist’s career, discuss the exhibition’s main themes, and offer new perspectives on some of Holbein's most recognizable images.
