Notes:
A New York artist, Grace Hamilton McIntyre was born in Staten Island and worked primarily in the delicate art of miniature portraits in watercolor painted on ivory. McIntyre received much of her commissions through family connections, depicting sitters from the wealthier tiers of New York society. The sitter's black dress with lace trim and simple jewelry emphasize both her social class and her honorably restrained taste.
Provenance:
The artist; by descent to her daughter, Mrs. Lois MacIntyre Darling; her bequest to the Library, 1991.
