Landscape with a Square Tower
1650
Etching and drypoint on paper.
88 x 156 mm
RvR 308
NHD 250, III
Provenance:
George W. Vanderbilt (1862-1914); from whom purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1905.
Inscription:
Signed and dated lower right, "Rembrandt f 1650".
Notes:
Watermark: None.
A slipped stroke crosses the signature. In later impressions this has worn away. (White and Boon)
As has been pointed out (in "Rembrandt Exhibition", Florence, 1951, no. 29) this landscape is based on two motifs; the tower of the Old Stadhuis, drawn later by Rembrandt in 1652, and a group of cottages seen on one of the dykes around Amsterdam. (White and Boon)
