Shirley as Robin Oakapple in Ruddigore, performing in the role until June 1888 when "B" Company was disbanded; James left D'Oyly Carte in 1891, but is known to have directed amateur operatic societies in Gilbert & Sullivan in Croydon (1920s) and Woolwich (1938-42).
