Accompanying note indicates that the photograph was autographed on the occasion of a breakfast Garibaldi attended in London at the home of United States Consul General Freeman Harlow Morse (1807-1891), which took place, according to contemporary newspaper accounts, on April 22, 1864. NNPM
With the signature of Garibaldi in ink below image, and an inscription in ink on the verso in the hand of Freeman Morse's daughter, Clara Morse, which continues on a piece of notepaper affixed to the back of the card, and which reads: "Written by Garibaldi when at the home of Mr. Morse U.S. Consul Genl. at London, Eng. Kensington Gate, S. Kenn. To meet Garibaldi at breakfast were his 2 sons & his Secty.-", with a list of fellow diners, including W.E. Forster (MP), Sir Curtis Lawson, Cyrus W. Field, Browning, J.S. Morgan, Chs.(?) Francis Harris, (Benjamin) Moran, "& many others whom I forget. [signed] Clara Morse". NNPM
