Summary:

Asking if he might recommend some young candidates for orders who might wish to teach before they enter the Seminary or while they are studying; discussing the proposal for a "uniform [illegible] for the trial of clergymen. I had not the most remote conception that my case should become one of the most conspicuous in the annals of the church.....Passing events afford the best comment, perhaps upon what a proposed general and permanent law of the church should provide for. By pointing out the hardships, and the want of fairness, equity and justice to which I have felt myself subjected, I may furnish suggestions of some practical value;" detailing the specific hardships as they relate to procedural issues; adding "But I forbear. I did not intend to write as a croaker. My simple object was to furnish you with some of the lights of my sad experience for the benefit of the future assailed."

Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan before 1901, possibly from the estate of Bishop William Stevens Perry of Iowa.
