Written from "Renishaw Hall, Renishaw, near Sheffield."
Possible years of writing inferred from contents of the letter: Sitwell first met Carson McCullers in New York in the fall of 1950; in 1951 McCullers visited Sitwell in England.--Cf. Victoria Glendinning, Edith Sitwell: a unicorn among lions (New York: Knopf, 1981), p. 291-295.
Part of a large collection of autograph letters of Dame Edith Sitwell to Kenneth and Jane Clark. Items in the collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see related collection-level record for more information.
Longing to see her, noting that she has heaps of news to share; remarking that her last poem hasn't "come through" yet because she is being pestered by a) the British Council, b) having to finish a long essay on poetry for an encyclopedia, c) Carson McCullers, and d) fear of dying. Noting that she daren't die for ages because she is having a row with the Times obituary editor. Mentioning that she is being pestered by a "really terrific American bore" whom she intends to foist on Tennessee Williams (because Williams foisted Carson McCullers on her).
