Hawthorne kept this notebook from July 1837 to September 1838: the earliest entry (p. 1) is dated July 5th 1837, and the final entry notes that Hawthorne left North Adams on 11 September and "reached home" on 24 September 1838.
Some portions of text canceled with dark brown or black ink. Leaves numbered on the rectos, 1-80. Leaves excised in the following locations: 2 leaves between leaves numbered 3 and 4; 1 leaf between leaves numbered 9 and 10; 1 leaf between leaves numbered 21 and 22; 1 leaf between leaves numbered 41 and 42; 1 leaf between leaves numbered 56 and 57; 1 leaf between leaves numbered 66 and 67.
