Voltaire gave this briefcase to the marquis de Florian, the husband of his niece Elisabeth Mignot. Her sister, Marie-Louise Mignot, Mme Denis, was Voltaire's companion for the last twenty-nine years of his life.
With extensive decorative gold tooling.
Exhibited numerous times at the Morgan Library as "Voltaire's briefcase."
